The Rise of Digital Education

This past year, digital education in corrections has spread like wildfire, enabling mass education in prisons through the use of tablets.  Education plays a vital role in rehabilitation and reintegration, as research proves that inmates who receive education while in prison are 43 percent less likely to become repeat offenders.  Understanding the undeniable impact of education in corrections, JPay made a commitment to making digital education a reality for any facility, helping to reform corrections and prepare offenders for success upon release.

Since launching the company’s education initiative, JPay’s Lantern, 4239 college credits have been earned by over 18,000 students. Expanding the company’s commitment to education, JPay also deploys free KA Lite educational videos through our kiosks, driving over 725,000 video downloads to date. From earning high school and college credits towards graduation to expanding knowledge in areas of interest and preparing for post-release success, digital inmate education serves as an opportunity for progression while incarcerated.

The nitty gritty…

JPay’s Lantern uses a Learning Management System (LMS) to host facility-approved content offering a range of courses, including GED prep work, basic mathematics, entrepreneurship and more. From our kiosks, classwork as well as educational videos can be downloaded onto the tablets so students can learn at their own pace – on their own time – outside of limited classroom interactions.

Mirroring the flipped-classroom model used by numerous colleges and universities, our infrastructure allows students and instructors to frequently correspond through the use of technology, allowing for more time in the classroom to explore topics in greater detail.

Taking it a step further, JPay also offers KA Lite, an open-source software that mimics the online experience of Khan Academy® for offline situations. This allows inmates to download educational videos long popular with the public for developing knowledge and building skills. By offering KA Lite and working with educational organizations nationwide, we strive to deliver a technology-driven education program designed to increase education opportunities in prisons to help reduce recidivism.

What impact do you think digital education in corrections will make on our society?

I think its a wonderful service, I just wish it was available to all …. Is there any news as to when or if Texas will be having future access to this service? It’s a great business model and a no-brainer for the business side, also happy productive inmates are more cost-effective so understanding some states reluctance and almost superstitious avoidance of this service is unbelievable, You need to upgrade your sales team !! This product practically sells its self. Please please any information would be most gratifying and extremely welcomed kindest regards Jo (UK)

This is such an important step in helping incarcerated individuals and offers such possibilities. Is it available in North and/or South Carolina yet? I have emailed and requested more information a number of times but have not received a response and there are two people I would love to see having access to this program.
