What’s this JP5 tablet all about? pt.2

We often times receive questions about the availability of our services in each state. Today in “JP5 101 pt. 2”, we will cover some additional common questions.


 Is the JP5 tablet available in my loved one’s state?

As of this posting, the JP5mini is available in state facilities in the following states:

  • Idaho, Louisiana, Minnesota, New Jersey, North Dakota, Ohio, Vermont, Virginia, and Washington state correctional facilities, as well as Milwaukee House of Corrections, Northlake Correctional Facility and Taft Correctional Facility.

The JP5s – along with the JP5mini – is available in the below state facilities:

  • Ohio, Minnesota and Vermont, as well as Northlake Correctional Facility. It is also currently available as part of a pilot program at West Tennessee State Prison (women’s section).

Georgia facilities are unique, as the JP5s is the only device available and the tablets are given to inmates when they arrive.  However, if your loved one is serving less than six months, they will not receive a tablet from the state, but they can purchase one.

Tablet availability can change, so be sure to check and with your loved one to stay up-to-date.

How much do the JP5s and JP5mini cost?

 This varies by state. The best way to find out pricing is to log into your JPay account on and see which options are available for you to purchase on your loved ones’ behalf. If the option to purchase the JP5 tablet is not available from your JPay account, please contact our customer service at 800-574-5729 for assistance.  Keep in mind, your loved one can only have one tablet.  However, if he/she currently has a JP5 device, only he/she could upgrade or purchase a new tablet from the kiosk.  This is often the reason why people don’t see the option to buy a JP5 device on


What products and services are available at my loved one’s facility and what are the rates?

 A good way to stay up-to-date with the products and services available at your loved one’s facility is to visit JPay will also send out notifications via email and via the JPay kiosks (located within the facility) when new services are added.  But the absolute best way to know what JPay services are available to your loved ones is to log into your JPay account periodically and review the options there… whenever a service is added (or in rare cases, removed), it will be reflected on the page you see when you log into or open the mobile app.


When will more services be brought to my loved one’s facility?

 This is up to the discretion of each state Department of Corrections. JPay does not control the process of adding new services in each state.

    Listen I’ve has the run around about these tablets I purchased one back in October for my loved one and it was sent to the wrong camp he keeps getting emails saying it’s being sent to his camp they sent two different tracking numbers one showed where it went to one camp and the 2nd showed it went to a camp he has never been too but then disappeared and it isnt available anymore… when you call they dont know anything about tablets they say only jpay can interact with the inmate now I want to know who I can speak too to cancel the tablet get my refund because i purchased it myself and to start over so my loved one can get the tablet that he should have had back in Nov it’s really beyond frustrating to deal with the oh we just have to apply a new label and resend out but it takes them 30-45days to do so it didnt take that long to take the money out of my account there already behind bars the least yall could do is have better customer service for us who havent committed a crime trying to help those who did somewhat sane I swear!!!

    To Whom it May Concern:
    My brother was recently incarcerated at Ware State prison in the State of Georgia. He is having problems with his JP5S(i think), I have called the customer support and emailed the support and have yet to receive any help with this to date. Here is the email I received from him

    “There is still something wrong with my tablet so I have to wait in line for the one and only kiosk in the dorm which locks up about 50% of the time. I need someone to call tech support at jpay and chase down the right path to get this issue resolved asap since it is limiting me significantly. I have entered a trouble ticket, everyone tells me that it is pretty useless to do that. The ticket reference # is 00368260.

    the description of the problem is that the tablet syncs with the kiosk, but no apps show up after sync. normally everyone else has shown me that they have all kinds of stuff on their tablet. I do show my name as the owner and the Radio app, but that is all. please help.”

    He says there are other inmates with the same problem and has been that way for months! Any help in resollving this issue ASAP would be greatly appreciated!!

    my son ordered his player months ago and I have tried calling your customer service to no avail …please let me know what I need to do to find out where his tablet is… people that have ordered tablets after him have received them and your customer service has informed me there is no system to look up orders witch cannot be right !? asked for a number to call for help and was told there is no other number and nothing they can do… please get back to me it would be so nice for him to have it son …its almost Christmas Thank you ~Maryjo Kline

    Hi Nori – If the tablet is at 100%, it should no longer be plugged in. Your loved one can use the tablet and then charge it again when the battery charge is much lower. Thanks!

    Can the inmate keep the device plugged in and charged at 100% always, or will that ruin the battery?
    Does it need to be unplugged so the battery runs down, and then plugged in again to charge it?.

    Also, he hasn’t been on JPay at all yet but I know it is available where he was placed. (He’s only been in the prison system for about a week and 2 days).. Once he gets his password/code or whatever they give him to log in, will he see all the emails and pics I’ve sent him the past couple of days?

    My love one is at the New Jersey State Prison and his JP5 has stopped working. He submitted a trouble ticket and was told he had to wait 45 days for approval and then another 30 days to receive the replacement. Why is the processing time longer than normal?

    Now that my fiance has transferred to a new facility, his tablet no longer works. My mother in law was told by a manager at Jpay that he would not be able to purchase any new media, however he would still have access to the media we had already purchased along with his pictures. But his tablet shut off the other night at midnight with a message saying ” You must plug into the kioske to continue”. What do we do now about his media and the pictures? Do we get refunded? Do we have a way to transfer all his music to the new mp3 player we have had to purchase?

    How are these measured? There are two available in Florida and I am not sure which one will be most suitable.
    One is 4.4″ and the other one is 7″.

    My inmate upgraded his jplayer and mailed his old one home. In order to unlock for personal use; I have a couple questions. Can I mail this is to be unlocked BEFORE *his* release since I have the old one? Is there a fee I need to pay online or payment that needs to be mailed in with player to cover return shipping costs?     Hi, Im new to this. First time dealing with someone being incarcerated. My boyfriend went to the ga diagnostic and classification center. He was shipped there last week Wednesday. This isn’t his first time going through that, so how long will it be for me to hear from him. I’ve emailed him and still no response. I really miss him and want to hear from him just to know that he’s ok. Do they allow them to make at least one phone call?

    Hi Emmy – you can see all of the facilities JPay services when you click on the “prison search” page on and click on Ohio. If tablets are available and you do not have the option to purchase, that means your loved one already has a tablet (or previously did) and only him/her can purchase a new tablet from the kiosk.     I was told that at the London Ohio Prison the inmates wouid all be getting jp5 tablets and they would be getting rid of the phones. They will be able to make calls from the tablets. If this is true, what can you tell me about that and how it will work exactly
