Inmate Music, Inspiring

Life behind those steel bars is certainly sad…it can even get monotonous at times. The day in day out routine that seems to go on endlessly could drive the sanest of us…crazy. For some, the answer, the release, the place where they can escape (at least in the mind) is music. To inmates, music is a way to feel free.
For one inmate incarcerated in Iowa, that peaceful place was found with a concert given by the Oakdale Community Choir. The mixed choir, lead by Dr. Mary Cohen, assistant professor of music for the University of Iowa, was the catalyst for peace to one inmate searching. You see, this is a “Choir”, but it is also an outreach program, designed to integrate inmates at the Oakdale Prison to become members.
The Choir sings…but beyond that, they create fellowship among the inmates, bringing them together in a way that no other avenue can.
They exchange a few pleasantries, take a few deep breaths, and then…rehearsal begins. Sent away for various crimes…no bright light in sight…same monotony when they wake up tomorrow…the inmates make music. They make it together and share something special, release their stress of prison life, and find their tranquility. The inmate music may not be concert quality, but it does bring joy to their hearts.
Whether singing in a choir or just plugging in (and checking out) to music…it’s clear that tunes are essential. JPay helps your family member or friend gain access to this vital asset, by providing a service which gets your loved one the funds they need while away to find their own bit of peace…and come out better.
